In the not-too-distant future, the new pro-Singularity government of the U.S. has severely restricted the ability of the Old Order Amish to survive. They can no longer use hospitals or highways, so when 14-year-old Zeke Yoder’s great-grandmother is bitten by a Genetically Modified Rat, Zeke must risk the dangers of the outside world to get her the antidote.

Something flapped past Zeke's face, swooped up behind him, and then landed on his shoulder. He plucked it off. It was a flexi-screen with a long message on it. The flexi-screen chirped. Zeke had seen flexi-screens before, but never one that seemed so … alive.
