It is my belief that novels shouldn’t be “merely” entertaining, but also useful; Glory Hole can tell you your future and give you advice, you just have to obey and listen carefully to Glory Hole and do what Glory Hole tells you to do. To use the oracle, you first have to understand that each chapter corresponds to a chapter of the I Ching, but not in any of the traditional sequences--in a sequence which the I Ching itself “advised me” to create. Here is a key to help you find the chapter you need:
Part 1, Chapter 1 9: Small Taming Chapter 2 28: Great Exceeding Chapter 3 25: Without Entanglement Chapter 4 26: Great Taming Chapter 5 37: People in the Home Chapter 6 12: Blocked Chapter 7 44: Coupling Chapter 8 17: Following Part 2, Chapter 1 46: Pushing Upward Chapter 2 60: Measuring Chapter 3 32: Lasting Chapter 4 33: Retreat Chapter 5 31: Influence Chapter 6 24: Returning Chapter 7 35: Advancing Chapter 8 16: Enthusiasm Part 3, Chapter 1 56: Traveling Chapter 2 39: Limping Chapter 3 40: Release Chapter 4 54: The Marrying Maiden Chapter 5 63: Already Across Chapter 6 22: Beauty Chapter 7 27: Nourishment Chapter 8 18: Corruption Part 4, Chapter 1 20: Seeing Chapter 2 6: Arguing Chapter 3 23: Stripping Away Chapter 4 59: Dispersing Chapter 5 43: Deciding Chapter 6 61: Inner Truth Chapter 7 62: Small Exceeding Chapter 8 38: Opposing Part 5, Chapter 1 1: Creative Force Chapter 2 13: People in Harmony Chapter 3 55: Abundance Chapter 4 57: Subtly Penetrating Chapter 5 53: Gradual Progress Chapter 6 8: Seeking Union Chapter 7 48: The Well Chapter 8 7: The Army Part 6, Chapter 1 4: Not Knowing Chapter 2 58: Opening Chapter 3 41: Decreasing Chapter 4 15: Integrity Chapter 5 10: Treading Chapter 6 21: Biting Through Chapter 7 34: Great Vigor Chapter 8 51: Shock Part 7, Chapter 1 47: Confined Chapter 2 30: Clarity Chapter 3 29: Repeating Chasms Chapter 4 49: Radical Change/Revolution Chapter 5 50: The Vessel Chapter 6 36: Brightness Hidden Chapter 7 42: Increasing Chapter 8 52: Stilling Part 8, Chapter 1 45: Gathering Chapter 2 2: Earth Chapter 3 19: Nearing Chapter 4 14: Great Possession Chapter 5 5: Waiting Chapter 6 11: Flow Chapter 7 64: Not Yet Across Chapter 8 3: Sprouting
There are many ways to throw the I Ching, the most common being the coin method; I’ll provide a link to instructions below. The basic idea is that you are asking a question. You throw six times, which gives you six lines, which gives you one of 64 hexagrams. But some of those lines are moving lines, and once they move or change you have a second hexagram. Most readings will then give you two hexagrams to consult, the first usually understood as the present situation and the second as where it is headed, or the first as the deep situation and the second as it specifically relates to you. Traditional readings also involve reading “the changing lines” themselves, the most specific answer to your question. There is no equivalent to the changing lines in Glory Hole. What I suggest is that you read the chapter of your primary hexagram, paying special attention to any sentences that seem to be directly addressing your question and any sentences that seem to be directly addressing you. (Be especially alert to sentences written in the second person.) Do the same with the relating hexagram. You may find that Glory Hole will drop its mask entirely, as if a voice is emerging from the book and speaking to you as if it has always known you and knows exactly who you are and what you need at the deepest level. In that case, do what that voice tells you to do.
