LEAHBELLE BEACHY AND THE BEINGS OF LIGHT
Leahbelle turned around and raced back outside to find something, she didn’t know what, something to smash it with, all of it, to put it all out of its misery, and there was Gonzalo, just getting off the motorbike. His hair was wild and he stared at her for a second like he didn’t recognize her. She’d never seen him look so crazy. He gave her a big hug and he laughed, a crazy kind of laugh. Fucking yes, he said. You came back for me. I haven’t been back here in years, he said. What do we do now? I hate this town. It’s burning, she said. Everywhere, it’s burning. Everybody hates this town, he said. Everybody hates this country, this government, this life that isn’t even life. The meat, she said. The meat’s … suffering. Can you hear it? It didn’t seem like he heard her. He was looking around at the burning former factories and abandoned buildings as if he was dreaming. As if it was the best dream ever.
Sixty seconds, he said. He laughed and he hugged her and he pointed at the sky. Fucking stars, he said. Everything’s different, she said. He said, Everything’s changed for good. I feel weird, she said. He said, We’ve got to go. Climb aboard. She did. But what’s out there? she asked. Chaos, he said. Total chaos. He started the engine and they raced away, toward the west, as the explosion behind them lit up the night sky, the brightness of the flames for a moment once again erasing the view of the stars.
