livingjelly.com exists, in part, to honor the great Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. Kathy Acker once said that the living writer she most wanted to be, if she couldn't be herself, was Juan Goytisolo. A fine choice, but if it was mine, I would choose Clarice. The only problem is, Clarice died in 1977. When I read her books, however, I feel as if I wrote them myself, in a different life in which I was a Ukrainian Jew who emigrated to Brazil at the age of 2. Or as if words exist in zones or continuums that vibrate with particular frequencies--and I'm a receiver for hers.

"The darkness was watching me with two enormous eyes set wide apart. So the darkness, too, was alive. Where could I find death? For I knew that death was living jelly."

This site also exists to honor me, Stephen Beachy. And why not? You may have heard that I'm cruel, vicious, and insanely jealous... particularly of one super-successful writer and celebrity and former truckstop child prostitute... JT LeRoy. In the Apocryphon of James it says, "Again I admonish you, you who exist: be like those who do not exist, that you may dwell with those who do not exist." In that sense, I am jealous, yes.
